Countdown to Contract at Cincinnati Bell

Members of CWA Locals 4400 and 4401 are counting down to a new contract at Cincinnati Bell, with negotiations continuing as the May 7 contract expiration neared.

CWAers held another big rally on May 6, keeping up their call for a fair wage increase, health care security for workers and retirees, employment security gains that will give workers access to the jobs of the future, and improvements in the grievance process that reflect mutual respect. The contract covers about 2,000 workers.

Management was pressing for massive givebacks in just about every area, from wages to benefits to job security and especially in health care for active and retired members, reported CWA District 4 Vice President Jeff Rechenbach.

More than 150 CWAers, retirees and other supporters - plus a 15-foot rat - turned out for the Cincinnati Bell annual meeting, where union members called on management to "get serious at the bargaining table" and asked lots of tough questions about executive compensation and recent salary increases granted to top executives.

The CWA bargaining team has stressed, from day one of negotiations, that the hard work of CWA members has pulled the company "out of the ditch" created by serious management missteps. The 2004 results: $1.2 billion in total revenues, $299 million in operating income, net income of $64 million, "strong results that we can be proud of," the bargaining team stressed.
