Congressional Backing Grows For Employee Free Choice Act

Support in the U.S. Congress for workers' rights to form unions and bargain collectively continued to grow as CWA and thousands of other labor activists geared up for a week of workplace and community actions June 28-July 4 in support of the Employee Free Choice Act.

CWA members across the country wore stickers to work proclaiming, "I'll fight for the FREEDOM to have unions" as they distributed and collected postcards from colleagues thanking Senator John Kerry for supporting the measure, H.R. 3619 introduced in the House by Representative George Miller (D-Calif.) and S. 1925, in the Senate by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.). They collected thousands of other postcards to be sent to President Bush, urging him to get behind the legislation.

"I cannot sufficiently emphasize the importance of what you are doing," CWA President Morton Bahr said. "This legislation would reverse 30 years of deterioration in the effectiveness of our labor laws, making it possible on a much broader scale for workers to organize through card check campaigns, and would impose stiffer penalties on management when it interferes with the process."

As the CWA News went to press the latest count for co-sponsors was 204 in the House and 31 in the Senate. They are listed below:
