Clinton, Edwards Weigh in on Proposition 75

CWA and other union members battling Proposition 75 on the California special election ballot got a boost on Oct. 26 when Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) sent e-mails to voters on their supporter lists, urging them to vote "no" on the measure.

On the other side of the fence, Republican presidential aspirant Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) has been campaigning alongside Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to promote Proposition 75, which aims to curtail the political involvement of public worker unions by restricting check off of contributions to their political action committees.

"The strength of our democracy depends on voters' faith in the fairness of the process, that everyone has a right to participate," Clinton wrote. Quoted by the Associated Press, she continued, "In taking away the rights of public employees, and only public employees, Proposition 75 would weaken our democracy. It would undermine the work and the rights of teachers, firefighters and health care givers."

Edwards emphasized the double standard Proposition 75 would create. "It would restrict the political activities of only public employees - not the governor's corporate contributors, not wealthy individuals and not special interests like big oil and drug companies."
