Cancer Claims Retired CWA Rep Wally Kimball

Wallace Kimball, a retired CWA representative in District 9, died March 1 of cancer at a hospital near his home in Roseville, Calif. He was 73.

"He loved his union and his travels and his friends. He was a good man," said his wife, Edith.

Kimball became active in CWA Local 9573 in San Bernardino after hiring on with General Telephone Co. of California in 1951. Over the next two decades, while working as a lineman, installer, repairman and customer field representative, he moved up the ranks of his local, serving as a steward, vice president and president.

District 9 Vice President Tony Bixler, who met Kimball in 1964 when both were local presidents, said, "You hardly find anyone who has the wit that Wally did. No matter what he found himself dealing with, he always managed to look on the bright side."

Kimball worked to help elect several local and congressional candidates and lobbied for state legislation to benefit working families. He participated in a 150-day strike against General Tel, served on the union's bargaining committee for that company and handled media contacts for his local.

He joined the staff as a CWA representative in September 1973, working from District 9's Sacramento, office.

Kimball worked in the Citrus Heights, Calif., office from May 1981, returned to Sacramento in March 1984 and retired in July 1990.

Survivors include his wife and five children, all of California: Debra Arms of Carmichael, Deborah Power of Highland, Pamela Brown of Long Beach, Tom Miller of Sacramento and Darla Quaresma of Cameron Park, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
