BellSouth, Verizon Southwest Bargaining Continues

With the clock ticking toward the Aug. 7 contract expiration, CWA members at BellSouth Corp. are standing strong behind their bargaining team.

Locals throughout the district are emailing messages of support to their CWA bargaining team. They are also showing their support in many other ways: sending wash tubs of goodies from locals in Tennessee, food and snacks from Locals 3201, Albany Ga., 3908, Montgomery, Ala., Local 3510, Greenwood, Miss., Local 3204, Atlanta and the North Carolina locals. The bargaining team only shared with management the lollipops that declared, "We won't be suckered by BellSouth," courtesy of Local 3902.

Windshield visors, bumper stickers, door hangers and arm bands have been supplied by Alabama locals and Locals 3104 and 3112 in Florida. Local 3204 in Atlanta helps keep the management team on track with lots of CWA signs outside the hotel.

At the bargaining table, subcommittees continued to meet on pensions, health care, and other issues, with the full common interest table scheduled to meet the week of July 26. Subcommittees of the BellSouth Telephone table also met, taking up part-timing, time-off administration, call monitoring and other issues. Negotiations at all other BellSouth tables also are continuing.

Bargaining also is underway for new contracts covering 3,400 workers at Verizon Southwest, formerly GTE Southwest, and 117 at Verizon Supply Chain. Those contracts expire Aug. 15 and Aug. 21.

This week, the full committee met on health care, pension, disability and other related issues; subcommittees for both groups have been meeting on work practice issues, including mandatory overtime, job bidding, service emergencies and other issues.

Local 6171 members are wearing red on Thursdays and showing support for their bargaining team by wearing buttons and stickers and through mobilization actions.
