BellSouth Bargaining Takes Up Health Care
Bargaining resumed July 7 in Atlanta between CWA and BellSouth, with union negotiators reminding the company that CWA will not negotiate a health care plan that sacrifices new hires and retirees and shifts unreasonable costs to active workers, reported Vice President Jimmy Smith. CWA is analyzing the company's proposed medical plan changes, especially in light of the company's positive financial situation.
As the Aug. 7 contract expiration draws closer, locals throughout District 3 are stepping up mobilization activities to support their bargaining team and remind BellSouth that CWA members are standing strong in their fight for a fair contract.
Among the activities:
*** District 3 has been holding training for local strike directors and community services chairs on CWA's Defense Fund and Members' Relief Fund requirements in the event that members are forced to strike.
*** In Louisiana, locals have held lunchtime informational picketing outside the operator center in Hammond, and outside the consumer center in Shreveport. More picketing is scheduled for New Orleans and Lake Charles.
**** Florida Locals 3101, Cocoa Beach, and 3104, Pompano Beach, are among those lining up picket captains and picket duty rosters to show solidarity and support for bargaining.
