AT&T Members Lobby Shareholders
CWA members took their fight for fairness to AT&T’s annual meeting in Chicago, where they leafleted shareholders and called on AT&T to treat workers with the respect they deserve.
In Charleston, W. Va., AT&T members held a solidarity action, while CWAers at the Chicago meeting were joined by members of the Screen Actors Guild and the Television and Radio Artists, who also held a support rally at AT&T offices in Cerritos, Calif.
SAG and AFTRA members are protesting AT&T’s use of non-union actors in its latest commercials; the unions have been on strike against a multi-employer advertising group since May 1. Mobilizations spotlighting AT&T’s anti-union operations are being planned for a number of sites, the unions said.
At the shareholder meeting, CWA Vice President Jim Irvine, communications and technologies, told those attending that CWA wants to work with AT&T to ensure its success well into the future, but “actions by the new lines of business are severely testing a partnership that only a few years ago was an industry model.”
Irvine urged shareholders to support a proposal calling on the board of directors to develop standards that would evaluate and compensate executives based in part on their efforts to include employees in workplace decisions.
