Apply Now for 2008 Beirne, Bahr Scholarships

Whether you're planning to study for a degree online or want to attend college anywhere in the United States or Canada, applications are now being accepted for scholarships bearing the names of two former CWA presidents.

Thirty scholarships, each worth $3,000 and named for founding CWA President Joseph Beirne, are available for students in the United States and Canada. The application deadline is April 30.

Winners, selected in a lottery drawing, also will receive second-year scholarships of the same amount if they satisfy their first year's academic requirements. CWA members and their spouses, children and grandchildren, including those of retired or deceased members are eligible.

The scholarships are given through the CWA Joe Beirne Foundation, which the union established in 1974 to honor its first president, who served for more than 30 years. Beirne took great pride in the roles he played in the fields of education and learning and other areas of social concern.

Two other scholarships, these for distance learning, are available through Empire State College of the State University of New York. They are named for CWA President Emeritus Morton Bahr, who retired in 2005.

Since 2001, Bahr scholarships have helped 30 students continue their education. CWA members and other union workers, family members or domestic partners are eligible.

The deadline for applications is June 1, 2008. Award decisions will be announced by the end of July for fall enrollment. Scholarship awards fully cover tuition, fees and special services. Apply online or download an application at www.esc.edu/bahr.  To have an application mailed, send an e-mail to special.programs@esc.edu or call (800) 867-5941.
