AFA-CWA Wins Review of Bankruptcy Judge Decision

The federal judge overseeing US Airways' bankruptcy petition is reconsidering his decision to allow the airline to cut wages for flight attendants by 21 percent for four months.

Judge Stephen Mitchell will hear arguments by AFA-CWA on Nov. 18 stressing that US Airways had saved more than $50 million when it stopped contributions to the defined benefit pension plan, but flight attendants were not given credit for that contribution.

AFA-CWA said flight attendants' pay should be cut just 4.7 percent in light of the pension sacrifices members are making.

CWA-represented passenger service agents aren't covered by a defined benefit pension plan.

Meanwhile, passenger service agents, represented by CWA, voted to authorize a strike or other legal action at the airline if they are unable to reach an equitable agreement. In a mail ballot counted on Nov. 10, 86 percent of voting members approved the strike authorization vote, demonstrating support for the bargaining team and determination to win a fair contract.

The CWA bargaining team of local union presidents and CWA staff is continuing to meet with US Airways management to work out a longer-term settlement.
