Adelphi Talks Resume as Company Settles ULPs

Armed with a National Labor Relations Board settlement, CWA Local 2004 in West Virginia returned to the bargaining table with Adelphia Cable on Sept. 16.

Local President Ron Gaskins said he's hopeful the agreement will lead to a contract for the 43-member unit and long-term job security for about a dozen customer service sales representatives whose work has been transferred to a non-union location.

Adelphia agreed to settle unfair labor practice charges filed by CWA rather than have the NLRB issue a formal complaint. Under the settlement, Adelphia must post a notice at its Morgantown location stating that the company will bargain in good faith, return the service representatives' work and bargain with the union over any future work transfers.

Meanwhile, Adelphia, which is in federal bankruptcy court to restructure, is fighting a CWA motion to appoint a special examiner to review Adelpia's labor relations activities during the reorganization. CWA argued its case at a Sept. 16 hearing, citing Adelphia's conduct while workers were on strike last spring, its violations of federal labor laws, and labor practices that hurt workers and the company. The court had not ruled as the CWA News went to press.

CWA also is bargaining with Adelphia in Cleveland, Los Angeles, Norton, Va., and Inverness, Fla.
