UPTE-CWA Local 9119 Members Join Protest Over Education Cuts

UPTE Rally PicCWA members at the University of California joined in a mass demonstration to protest the state's systematic underfunding of all levels of education, from K-12 to higher education, that has resulted in huge tuition increases and program cuts at the university.

Members of UPTE-CWA Local 9119 rallied with students and faculty to call for adequate funding for education and accountability by education administrators to keep universities like UC affordable and accessible.

The UC Board of Regents is supporting increases that raise student fees to more than $10,000 a year and has carried out the first of its threatened job cuts, laying off 34 custodians. Local 9119, which represents more than 11,000 researchers, professional and administrative workers at the university, has called on the Board of Regents to stop victimizing students, workers and higher education. Instead, the university should take back the more than $350 million in bonuses paid to staff earning $200,000 per year, the local said.
