15 Republicans Ask for Vote on Overtime

Fifteen U.S. House Republicans have sent a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert asking him to allow a vote on legislation that would repeal any part of the new Bush administration rules that take away workers' overtime pay rights.

The Senate approved an amendment in May protecting overtime rights against the Department of Labor's assault, but Republican leaders in the House have maneuvered to bar the issue from even being debated, let alone coming to a vote.

"We remain concerned the new overtime rules could result in some of our constituents losing their right to overtime pay," the letter writers said, requesting a meeting with Hastert (Ill.) to discuss options for a vote.

"We believe this request to be of the utmost urgency," they said. "Once the new overtime regulations take effect on Aug. 23, it may be too late to restore overtime eligibility for our constituents."

The letter was circulated by Republican Congressmen Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey and Steve LaTourette of Ohio and was signed by 13 other Republican members: Sherry Boelhert, Sue Kelly, Peter King, John McHugh, Jack Quinn and John Sweeney of New York; Mike Ferguson, Jim Saxton and Chris Smith of New Jersey; Jim Leach and Jim Nussle of Iowa; Tim Johnson, Illinois; and Thaddeus McCotter, Michigan.
