Allies Join the Call To Halt Nexstar-TEGNA Merger
Last week, 28 public-interest groups, labor unions, and civil-rights organizations joined CWA-represented broadcast production and newspaper workers in our petition to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) calling for a halt to a proposed merger of Nexstar and TEGNA. The groups issued a letter of support for the petition, which members of NABET-CWA and The NewsGuild-CWA filed in 2025.
In the letter, signers wrote, “The proposed transaction would cause incredibly high levels of concentration in local TV markets, would raise cable and satellite prices around the country, would cause irreparable harm to local news and consumers, and would be contrary to the public interest.”
If approved, the merger could increase Nexstar’s national reach to more than 80 percent of U.S. television households, more than twice as large as the 39 percent limit set by Congress. CWA and allies warn of a marked loss of local news, viewpoint diversity, and overall broadcast competition. This merger would put more power into the hands of an elite few corporate owners whose interests may run counter to a fair and free press capable of holding those in power to account.
