Victories elsewhere:

• District 1. Forty-three employees at the Jewish Press in Brooklyn, N.Y., won voluntary recognition for wall-to-wall representation at the facility. They will be represented by CWA Printing Sector Local 6 (CWA 14156).

When belt-tightening at Hemet Valley Hospital became down right mean-spirited, licensed vocational nurses, clinical technicians and laboratory technicians responded, choosing representation by CWA Local 9588. They voted 59-54 on Sept. 19 to bring their unit of 187 workers into the local.

More than 380 newsstand employees in New York City on Sept. 21 chose representation by the New York Newspaper Guild/ TNG-CWA Local 31003, despite an intense anti-union campaign of intimidation and electronic monitoring.

An organizing campaign among workers at Cingular Wireless in Illinois has resulted in a major wireless win, bringing 1,200 new members to CWA.

Cingular is a new company, created by the merger between SBC and BellSouth wireless companies.
