Workers' Memorial Day - April 28, 2007

On April 28, 2007, CWA and the U.S. labor movement will once again celebrate and observe Workers' Memorial Day to remember those who have become ill, injured, or killed on the job, as well as to renew our fight for strong safety and health protections. Participation in Workers' Memorial Day - 2007 is of particular significance to CWA. During the last year, CWA has lost four of our members to workplace fatalities. In addition, many of our members have suffered work-related injuries, illnesses, and "near misses," in some cases, suffering severe medical disorders because of these incidents.

Pandemic Flu (Influenza)

OSHA recently issued a new guidance for the protection of workers from Avian Flu viruses: "Guidance on Preparing for an Influenza Pandemic." This guidance document sets up an "Occupational Risk Pyramid" primarily covering healthcare providers such as doctors, nurses, dentists, and emergency medical technicians (EMT's).

The Union's Occupational Safety and Health Conference will be held March 23-25, 2007 at the Holiday Inn on the Hill in Washington, D.C. The conference will focus upon issues such as the CWA's Steward's Army: the role of OSH activists, electrical hazards within the telecommunications industry, and using the collective bargaining process to improve working conditions and help build and strengthen the Union.

The 2007 CWA Occupational Safety and Health Conference will be held March 23-25, 2007, at the Holiday Inn on the Hill in Washington, D.C. immediately before the Union's Legislative Conference, March 25-28, 2007.

NABET-CWA Cameraman Struck, Killed by Car

Gordon Davis of NABET-CWA Local 52031, a veteran cameraman on the overnight "hot-spot" beat for WJLA-TV 7 and its partner station, NewsChannel 8, was struck by a motorist while covering a fire in Upper Marlboro, Md., on Dec. 20. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
