Fall Fatality: Phillip Hodges (CWA Local 4100, Detroit, Michigan)
On May 5th, 2007, Phillip Hodges, a member of CWA Local 4100 and a Construction and Special Services (CSS) Technician employed by at&t, suffered fatal injuries when he fell from a ladder while performing work on an outdoor residential telecommunications cable/strand. After hearing Brother Hodges fall to the ground, the customer contacted emergency medical services. In turn, Phillip was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit.
The fatality is being investigated by Michigan OSHA (MIOSHA). In addition, CWA Local 4100 and at&t are participating in the investigation of this tragic incident. The Local is also in discussions with the employer to develop a plan of action to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again.
Brother Hodges was 31 years old. He is survived by his wife, their 6 year old daughter, and 11 year old son. James Dennis, Secretary/Treasurer, CWA Local 4100, stated in an eloquent article that Phillip Hodges "was not just a number, an employee, or a dues paying member, Phillip Hodges was one of our own family members and he will be missed."
