Statement by the CWA Human Rights Committee on Donald Trump

Washington, D.C. -- Following is a statement from Claude Cummings, head of the Communications Workers of America’s Human Rights Committee, on the candidacy of Donald Trump:

Donald Trump's comments in the video released on Oct. 7, and other released audio interviews with Trump, confirm him as a man of low character with the mentality of a sexual predator. He can never be allowed to serve as President of our great nation.

Trump's crass remarks are disgusting but not at all surprising. Many times since announcing his campaign for the presidency, and many more times in previous years, Donald Trump has demeaned women, disrespected former prisoners of war, insulted the parents of fallen soldiers, and vilified Latinos, African Americans and other ethnic Americans.

Our American spirit is strong, and by understanding and accommodating our differences, we can realize and build upon the value of our diversity. Donald Trump exploits fear and promotes himself by appealing to the worst in human nature. He is a disgrace to the Republican Party and an embarrassment generally. As President, he would be truly dangerous.

I know the American people are strong enough and wise enough to reject the depraved spectacle of Donald Trump. We are uniting proudly behind Hillary Clinton, working diligently and respectfully with one another to close the wage gap, reform criminal justice and bring opportunity to the middle class and all those who work hard every day but are being left behind.

CWA’s Committee on Human Rights includes CWA’s National Women’s Committee and the Committee on Civil Rights and Equity. Cummings is CWA Vice President representing CWA members and retirees in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.
