Statement of Claude Cummings on Trump Administration Policy to Separate Children from Parents Seeking Safety and Asylum in America

We can’t yet sum up the cost to America for the tragedy of Donald Trump becoming our President, but we already know the price is way too high.

Trump’s biggest lie is one of the first things he said after announcing for President. He promised his supporters that he would “Make America Great Again.” It is a lie.

There is no greatness in tearing children from the arms of mothers and fathers. Warehousing children in caged enclosures and in tent cities under a 100-degree sun is no act of greatness. Ripping families apart who are fleeing hardship and death is an act of terror and the antithesis of greatness.

And don’t look for greatness in the actions of other Republican leaders. It is clear enough that too few have the courage or moral strength to stand up to a tyrant, even to protect innocent children. 

America’s greatness won’t be found in the vile actions of Donald Trump nor in the conscience of Trump Party Republicans. America’s greatness will arise as we unite to resist.

As union brothers and sisters, as fathers and mothers with hearts and souls, we must rise up against the immoral actions that Trump has ordered on our border. Using our voices now and our votes in November, it is up to us to find and show America’s greatness.
