CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. to Deliver Remarks at DNC

Cummings Will Join Other Union Leaders to Celebrate Biden-Harris Record, Voice Support for Kamala Harris

(CHICAGO) — Communications Workers of America (CWA) President Claude Cummings Jr. will be delivering remarks at the Democratic National Convention on Monday evening and celebrating the Biden-Harris administration’s monumental investment in broadband. CWA was one of the first unions to voice support for Kamala Harris and has worked closely with the Biden-Harris administration to ensure broadband funding stemming from both the American Rescue Plan and the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act helps close the digital divide and creates good-paying jobs.

In its endorsement, CWA applauded Vice President Harris’ record fighting to empower the working class and unions and her role in making the Biden-Harris Administration one of the most pro-union administrations in the history of the United States.

The Biden-Harris administration made history when it passed the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA), allocating $65 billion to support the expansion and affordability of broadband to help close the nation’s digital divide. In a historic first for federal broadband funding, the bill requires that companies that receive these funds adhere to high labor standards in order to create good union jobs. The IIJA directs states and localities to prioritize broadband projects from entities that have a demonstrated record of and plans to be in compliance with Federal labor and employment laws.

During his remarks, which are scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET, President Cummings will touch on the importance of closing the digital divide and creating good, union jobs in the process. Since the IIJA’s passage, CWA members have been working closely with state legislators and regulators to shape broadband policies that will ensure projects deliver the speed and reliability that customers need and the economic boost to local communities that the IIJA promises.
