Workers, Board Authorize VIS Strike

Workers at Verizon Information Services in the Mid-Atlantic states are poised for a possible strike following a 9-to-1 membership authorization vote and strike approval this week from the Executive Board.

Informal talks with the company were scheduled to begin today as CWA seeks to wrap up a first contract for the 1,700 yellow pages workers after five months of bargaining. The employees work as sales reps, graphic artists and support personnel in 19 offices from New York through Virginia. CWA was certified as their bargaining representative last March.

Meanwhile, the NLRB is investigating CWA unfair labor practice charges against VIS, including firing of union supporters, coercive interrogation and surveillance, changing job conditions unilaterally, destroying union literature and failure to bargain in good faith.

Of special concern to the workers, VIS, without consulting CWA, changed the sales commission plan in a manner that drastically reduced the pay of sales reps and imposed harsh new provisions in the performance evaluation program.

VIS publishes more than 350 separate yellow pages directories in the region, with about one-third of them scheduled for production between now and the end of the year. A strike could cause publishing delays or errors in customer listings, according to the employees.
