Why I Fight: Anita Andrews, CWA Local 4322
In July, I started working on the Stand Up Ohio Project with the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, a coalition of community organizing groups, labor unions, faith organizations, and policy institutes across the state. Together we're encouraging people to fill out registration cards.
When people say "Voting doesn't make much of a difference" or "What's the point of voting?" I tell them that voting is your power. Your vote is your voice. And you definitely need a voice in your community.
We're usually on the defensive end, fighting and trying to repeal an issue. So to be able to go out and talk to people and take an offensive stand is great. People are telling me what's going on in the community, what they like to see done, issues they are dealing with like vacant homes, Medicare and Medicaid.
People in the community are getting more in tune to what's going on in politics. They're ready to start letting their voices be heard, to step up, get involved and be educated about the big issues. Our community is getting fired up. They're coming up with strategies and plans of action. It's not about union or non-union, it’s about bringing together the community around community issues.
It's so exciting. This is something that is needed and I feel privileged I've been given the opportunity to work on this project. When you work for change, it's change for the better - for everyone. The entire community benefits. That's what motivates me.
