Walter Herrmann, Retired CWA Representative in District 1, Dies

Walter W. Herrmann, a CWA representative in District 1 for 30 years, died suddenly at St. Peter’s Hospital, near Albany, N.Y., on May 13, after being stricken at home. Herrmann was 79.

“Walter played a key role in our organizing victory among the New York Telephone Plant workers from 1958 through February 1961, when we won that election,” said CWA President Morton Bahr, who was then New York state director. “He was the first person appointed to staff, in October 1961, from the plant unit, and he, more than anyone else, helped me organize the group after we won the election. Walter carried an enormous work load and was a dedicated union builder.”

Born October 6, 1921 in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Charles and Mamie Herrmann, he served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He took a job as an installer for Western Electric from December 1946 to November 1948, worked briefly as an electrical assembler for Sperry Gyroscope during 1949, then hired on as a switchman for New York Telephone Co. in August 1949. He was a member of CWA Local 1101.

Herrmann spent most of his career in the downstate New York office, then transfered to the Albany office, where he served until he retired in December 1982.

Herrmann is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Luckey Herrmann; a son, Robert, and a daughter, Joan Herrmann, both of Guilderland, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Andrew and Adam Herrmann; a brother, Harold Herrmann, of Clearwater, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Herrmann.
