VIS Recognizes CWA for Westchester, N.Y. Unit

Verizon Information Services this week recognized CWA as the bargaining agent for 55 workers in Westchester County, N.Y. – the first VIS unit organized under the 2000 Verizon neutrality and card check agreement.

Recognition came after a card count held Jan. 22 at offices of the American Arbitration Assn., where CWA officials presented cards signed by 70 percent of the employees. The unit includes sales representatives, graphic artists and support personnel at Verizon’s yellow pages organization.

While hundreds of VIS workers signed CWA representation cards last year, recognition has been stalled by legal actions as the company and the union have argued over interpretation of the agreement and definition of bargaining units.

CWA and VIS are continuing top level discussions aimed at resolving the dispute and creating a more cooperative relationship, said Executive Vice President Larry Cohen. Meanwhile, VIS workers throughout the former Bell Atlantic territory are moving ahead with organizing efforts involving some 1,500 workers at 22 VIS offices.
