Union Delegation Presses for Workers' Rights

A worker from the TNG-CWA unit fighting for recognition at the Chinese Daily News is among a delegation of trade unionists from the United States in Taiwan this month to discuss the state of workers' rights in both countries with educators, community leaders, student groups and others.

The delegation wants to build respect for workers' rights by both Taiwanese employers in the United States and U.S. companies that have set up operations in Taiwan.

The group includes Lynne Wang, a reporter for the Chinese Daily News/World Journal in Monterey Park, Calif.; Kent Wong, director of the Center for Labor Research and Education at UCLA and the founding president of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO; and Ben Hensler, AFL-CIO international campaign coordinator.

Wang has been active in the effort by 150 workers at the Chinese Daily News to get the Taiwan-based company to recognize their union status. The workers voted for TNG-CWA representation in March 2001, despite a fierce anti-union campaign. While their employer continues to fight their right to representation, the workers have won strong support from the community and elected officials.

Further details about the tour and the issues being raised are available in Mandarin Chinese and English at ga.cwa-union.org, as well as ample information about the workers' struggle at the Chinese Daily News.
