UCLA-Cal/OSHA Settlement Agreement

On September 30, 2010,representatives of Cal/OSH, UCLA, and UPTE-CWA Local 9119 signed a settlement agreement re. Cal/OSHA identified laboratory safety violations. The settlement includes an aggressive abatement program and timeline that UCLA must meet. In addition, the settlement indicates UPTE must be included in this process and fines UCLA a total of $36,930 (following adjustments after modifications to the original citations).

UPTE-CWA Local 9119 deserves honorable mention for the CAL/OSHA action as well as ensuring UCLA is providing safe and healthful working conditions for its members/university employees. Following the tragic death of Sheri Sangji, a 23 year-old lab worker, in 2009, the state-wide local has played a key role in pressing for improved laboratory safety and health protections.
