Tax Cuts
When the George W. Bush campaign tried to find a “typical” family to illustrate how his tax cuts would help them, it was no easy matter.
The campaign e-mailed Republican party officials in New Mexico asking them to screen families to find ones that might be helped by the Bush tax plan. The criteria: the family must earn between $35,000 and $70,000 a year, itemize its taxes, have no children in day care, no children in college, no children younger than age one and no substantial savings outside of a 401(k).
In contrast, the Gore campaign has created a web site featuring five very different families that would benefit from Gore’s plans — to a far greater extent than they would under Bush. Check them all out at www.realplansforrealpeople.com.
