Retired Staffer Jim Tricoli Dies

Vincent J. (Jim) Tricoli, a longtime District 7 staff member, died March 7 at his home in Albuquerque, N.M., following a battle with cancer. He was 73.

Jim Tricoli joined the union staff in 1966, first serving as a CWA representative in Phoenix, Ariz., where he is remembered for helping organize the Western Electric cable plant.

He transferred to the union’s Albuquerque office in 1972 as New Mexico — El Paso (Texas) director, in what was then CWA District 8. He became New Mexico director in 1984, when pursuant to 1982 convention action, El Paso became part of CWA District 12, which is now District 6. After another reorganization by the 1986 convention, Albuquerque came under District 7 and Tricoli’s title reverted to CWA representative for consistency throughout the district.

District 7 Vice President John Thompson remembers Tricoli as having “one of the most positive attitudes of any person I’ve met. A lot of the staff took problems to him, union and otherwise, and his advice was always very, very good.”

Born April 9, 1926 in Buffalo, N.Y., Tricoli went to work at Western Electric’s Buffalo plant in 1947, following a stint in the U.S. Marine Corps. During World War II he fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima and was awarded both a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He worked as a utility man for 19 years for Western Electric before joining the CWA staff. He retired in July 1990.

Survivors include Tricoli’s wife, Marlene Anderson Tricoli of Albuquerque; a daughter, Joanne Blackwell, and two sons, Robert and Michael, all of Phoenix; three sisters, Bess Lonzi, Jo DeLozier and Camille Jeris, all of Buffalo and a brother, Paul Tricoli of Santa Fe, N.M.
