Retired CWA Staffer Daniel Boone Dies

Daniel M. Boone, a retired administrative assistant to three CWA vice presidents, died at his Wyoming ranch March 26 after suffering a heart attack. He was 72.

Born and raised in South Dakota, Boone went to work as a line technician for Northwestern Bell in his home state in 1947. He was active in CWA Local 7505 throughout his 25 years with the phone company, serving as a steward, board member and president.

In 1973, he was hired as a CWA representative in District 7, working in the Omaha, Neb., office. In 1980, he chaired the bargaining committee for Local 7470’s complex negotiations with Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph. His work so impressed the 42 members of the local’s policy committee that they gave him a standing ovation.

“He was a people’s person with lots of people skills,” said his friend Fay Marsh, retired assistant to the vice president in CWA District 7. “He was a good negotiator. He took tough stands when he had to.”

Marsh and Boone met in 1947 at Northwestern Bell and their friendship grew as both served their local. “He was active in the union from the day he went to work,” he said.

Boone was named an administrative assistant to the vice president in District 7 in 1981, working for Jim Gordon and J. Duane Haywood. When CWA restructured in 1987, he moved to Englewood, Colo., to serve in the same position under Vice President Walter Maulis in what was then District 8. He retired in 1988.

Boone was an avid hunter, fisherman, pilot and carpenter, and a “great storyteller who made everyone laugh,” Marsh said, noting that Boone didn’t mind the ribbing he got because of his famous name. “He’d make it count for them,” he said. “He’d play the part.”

Boone raised buffalos on his ranch in Aladdin, Wyo., where he lived with his wife, Patricia. He is also survived by seven children, 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
