Rally at Chinese Daily News

Employees of the Los Angeles-based Chinese Daily News, joined by many elected officials and community activists, took a strong stand in their fight for a union at an April 12 news conference. The workers, mostly Taiwanese immigrants, voted a year ago to join The Newspaper Guild-CWA in spite of a fierce anti-union campaign waged by the paper’s owners, the Taiwan-based United Daily News. The National Labor Relations Board is investigating the company for multiple violations of federal labor law, as management continues to refuse to bargain. Stephanie Moore, CWA organizer, said the workers “are entitled to the benefits of federal labor law and are entitled to make a fair choice about union representation. Newspaper management is seeking to block that voice, and we cannot allow that to continue.” Pictured above at podium is California Assemblywoman Judy Chu, with Moore.
