NMB Denies Petition For Rerun Election at American

CWA is continuing to work with American Airlines passenger service agents who are seeking a voice and representation in the workplace, despite the refusal of the National Mediation Board to order a rerun of the December 1998 representation election. CWA has called on the NMB to reconsider the decision.

"We're going to stand with these thousands of passenger agents and over the next year help them build an even stronger organization to represent their interests and to eventually prevail in a representation vote," said CWA President Morton Bahr.

The NMB denied CWA's petition for a new election, despite evidence of management's coercion, intimidation of workers and other violations of the Railway Labor Act. In the last election, nearly 5,800 employees, or 41 percent, voted for CWA representation, but under RLA rules, a majority of all bargaining unit members must vote in order for the election to be valid.
