Lucent, Solectron Corp. Reach Purchase Agreement

As part of a continuing company-wide restructuring, Lucent Technologies has reached a three-year purchase agreement with Solectron Corp., resulting in Solectron’s taking over a major portion of the manufacturing work at Lucent’s Merrimack Valley Works facility.

For CWA members at Lucent, members of Locals 1365 and 1366, this presently means about 289 production jobs will be shifted to Solectron, along with an additional 260 “transitional production” jobs. The work will continue to be done at the North Andover, Mass., facility, which Solectron has leased for an undetermined time while Solectron finds a new location within 33 miles of the factory. About 345 production jobs will continue as part of Lucent’s Integration Center.

At a contract explanation meeting in North Andover, members reviewed the terms of CWA’s discussions with Solectron over employment conditions of Lucent workers. Discussions between CWA national and local officials and Solectron representatives began in late January as talks between Lucent and Solectron moved forward. Whether workers stay with Lucent or move to Solectron will be determined on a seniority/voluntary choice plan basis and occupation, according to the agreement.

CWA Locals 1365 and 1366 led an effective mobilization and public information campaign, and with the support of religious and civil rights groups, rallied the community behind the fight to stop the destruction of family wage jobs.

“The Crisis in the Valley Committee,” a labor and community coalition, held public forums to press Lucent to keep as many quality jobs as possible in the area.
