Get Set for College with CWA Scholarships

Helping pay for higher education is part of CWA’s commitment to its families and ensuing generations. Membership opens the door to three possible sources of college funding:

  • The Joseph Anthony Beirne Foundation. Thirty two-year scholarships paid at the rate of $3,000 annually are awarded each year to CWA members, spouses or their children in the United States or Canada. Scholarships may be used for community college, college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level. Applications will be accepted from Dec. 1, 1998 through March 31, 1999. Prior recipients may not apply. The Beirne Foundation was established Oct. 7, 1974 in honor of CWA’s founding president. The fund is maintained through voluntary contributions of CWA locals, officers and members.
  • Ray Hackney Scholarships. Eight scholarships of $4,000 each, payable at $1,000 for each of four years, are awarded to CWA members, their spouses or children in the United States. An additional eight scholarships of $2,000 each are awarded to members or dependents of Communica-tions International unions in Central or South America. Applications must be mailed by Feb. 28, 1999. The Hackney scholarship fund was established in 1965 to honor Ray Hackney, a former CWA vice president who worked closely with unions comprising Postal, Telegraph and Telephone International, CI’s predecessor organization.
  • Union Plus Credit Card. A total of $250,000 in scholarships is available to members of AFL-CIO affiliated unions, their spouses or children, regardless of whether the member is a card holder.
