"From the Telegraph to the Internet" Draws Strong Reviews

CWA President Morton Bahr's book, "From the Telegraph to the Internet," continues to attract considerable attention and has been the recipient of several noteworthy reviews since its publication last fall in commemoration of CWA's 60th anniversary.

CWA members and locals can still order copies of the book at special prices (see order form) for a variety of uses in their local communities. A sampling of what some of the reviewers have said follows.

In a review published in The Nation, Marcus Raskin wrote "this book should be required reading in education programs at labor institutes, universities and especially business schools, so that its readers may gain insight into the present-day struggles, tactics and organizing purposes of a U.S. labor union."

Raskin, co-founder of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C., characterized the book as a "deeply moving narrative of a committed labor leader who has written a compelling autobiography about what it means to fill various roles at a time of tumultuous change in American technology and corporate restructuring."

Writing in the Washington newspaper, The Hill, veteran labor observer Steve Schlossberg calls the book "a very readable story," noting that "CWA stands in stark contrast to many unions which have seen their memberships decline precipitously." Conversely, Schlossberg adds, "the union has flourished while going about the process of reinventing itself institutionally and developing a vision for the future."

The CWU Voice, the publication of the Communications Workers Union in Great Britain, characterized the author of CWA's story as "an articulate and persuasive advocate for modern, progressive trade unionism."

Monsignor George Higgins of The Catholic University of America wrote "'From the Telegraph to the Internet' is a superb book from every point of view." He refers to the book as a "timely and absorbing story of the CWA" and labeled it "required reading for anyone who wants to know where labor is heading as we approach the New Millennium."

Former U.S. Secretary of Labor Ray Marshall sounded a similar chord in a review published in the CWA News, calling the book "an interesting and perceptive discussion of CWA's past and a blueprint for its future . . . an important book for all who are concerned about the future of the American labor movement."
