Former V.P. Mitch Roshto Dies

Mitchell Roshto, former vice president of CWA District 10, now part of District 3, died on Sept. 11 of a heart attack at age 73.

Roshto joined what is now Local 3411, Shreveport, La., in 1953 when he went to work as switching technician for South Central Bell. As a local vice president from 1964 to 1970 he was involved with organizing at Western Electric, Norton Manufacturing in Huntsville, Ala., and several trucking companies in Shreveport.

He was tapped for the CWA staff in 1972 where he continued to be active in organizing and assisting locals in Birmingham and later Baton Rouge.

In 1980, Roshto was elected vice president of the district, covering Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee. He served one term and was succeeded by T.J. Volk in 1983. Roshto then returned to the staff, retiring in 1985 as East Tennessee director.

Norma Powell, recently retired administrative assistant to the vice president of District 3, worked with Roshto on dozens of organizing campaigns and remembered him as "a good man, strong and committed to the union."

He is survived by his wife of 38, years, Laverne Sibley Roshto, of Pineville, La., as well as two sons, two daughters, 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
