CWA Women's Committee and the Coalition of Labor Union Women Pledge Increased Labor Unity

Women’s rights are under attack from right-wing politicians in state houses across the country spearheaded by politicians determined to set back hard fought gains earned by working women.  In support of women everywhere, the CWA National Women’s Committee and the CWA Human Rights Department under the direction of CWA Executive Vice President Annie Hill want to highlight the work of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) for years of dedicated, outstanding service to all women.

In the past CWA has worked cooperatively CLUW.  However, the current round of discussions held in May and June with CLUW national President Karen See and CLUW national Vice President and Washington Chapter president

Brenda Savoy laid the groundwork necessary to make significant progress.  Our primary focus will be on jobs, pay equity, organizing, and other issues that have made a difference for women.  “The role of our organization is to support legislative, political and organizing efforts that achieve our ultimate goal of helping women become leaders in the union,” says President See.

CLUW has pledged to work with our union on the AT&T/T-Mobile campaign,  continue their work on our critically important Speed Matters campaign, and  help with upcoming political campaigns this year and in 2012.  Together, we will continue to work on essential issues that impact women like healthcare and jobs.  “Our partnership with CLUW will bring added value to all of our legislative, political, and organizing campaigns,” says CWA Executive Vice President Annie Hill.  “So many CWA members already belong to CLUW.  We look forward to expanding the organization’s ranks while at the same time building a stronger platform to support women’s growth within our own union.”

CWA encourages you to become a member of CLUW and help support their efforts as well as our own.  Membership applications will be available at the CWA Human Rights Booth during our 2011 Annual Convention in Las Vegas.  The CLUW 2011 annual conference is fast approaching.  Preparations are underway for the 16th Biennial Convention, September 7-10, 2011, in Orlando, Florida, not too long after the CWA National Women’s Conference in Chicago, Illinois,

August 21-23, 2011.  Information about CLUW’s convention can be found at www.cluw.org.  We encourage you to participate.
