CWA Urges House Passage of Bipartisan Patients' Rights Bill
The Communications Workers of America calls on the House of Representatives to support H.R. 2723, the Bipartisan Consensus Managed Care Improvement Act, and to retain the so-called "whistler-blower" provisions, which would protect health care professionals from retaliation or discrimination for reporting poor quality of care, or disclosing information related to the care, services or conditions affecting patients.
CWA enthusiastically supports the bipartisan measure introduced by Reps. John Dingell (D-Mich.) and Charles Norwood (R-Ga.) as an important step toward making our health care system more accountable to the medical needs of patients and their families, not insurance companies.
CWA has traditionally supported universal access to affordable health care for all Americans, including an assurance that patients have access to emergency treatment, along with expansions in health care coverage for women.
A key element of this bill is the safeguards it includes for health care workers and providers. A significant number of CWA members are nurses and other health care professionals who should not be penalized or fear retaliation for doing their jobs. We urge Congress to keep this important safeguard in place and to pass the Dingell-Norwood bill.
