CWA Local 3908 Executive Vice President Al Henley has been appointed assistant commissioner of labor by Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman. Henley first went to work for Bell South in January 1972 and, said CWA Representative Jack Baccari, “signed a union card on his first day of work.” In 1985 he was elected Bell operating company representative in his local and, in 1988, was elected EVP. In 1996 he won election to the state AFL-CIO executive board. From 1988 until his recent appointment by the governor, Henley served as lobbyist for the CWA Alabama Political Legislative Committee.

William J. Bryan, recent secretary-treasurer of NABET-CWA who helped facilitate the merger of the two unions in 1994, has retired. Bryan, 65, worked closely with the CWA secretary-treasurer’s office to bring NABET’s record-keeping into compliance with CWA’s. He also oversaw the closing of NABET’s Bethesda, Md., and Chicago offices and relocation to CWA headquarters in Washington, D.C. “I believe the merger to be one of the best and smartest moves ever made by NABET,” Bryan said. “The merger has been a huge benefit to both unions.” Bryan began working in television at NBC News in Cleveland in 1961 and joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE, AFL-CIO). When NBC switched to electronic cameras in 1979, Bryan became a member of NABET Local 42. Almost immediately, he was appointed an alternate steward. He was elected treasurer that same year, served two 2-year terms, then was elected president. He served on the international’s network negotiating committee for NBC bargaining in 1987 and 1990, and, in 1990, was elected secretary-treasurer of the international. Reelected in 1994 as sector secretary-treasurer, he chose not to run in 1998, preferring to finish his career as a special staff representative.

CWA Secretary-Treasurer Barbara Easterling is a recipient of the Israel Bonds organization’s Golden Anniversary Award, for her contribution to informing the labor movement about securities issued by the state of Israel for the development of that nation’ economy. The first bonds were issued in 1951. Easterling is shown receiving the award from former prime minister and current Minister for Regional Development Shimon Peres, center, and Israel Bonds CEO Gideon Patt. Easterling serves as co-chair of the Israel Bonds Labor Advisory Board and led an Israel Bonds delegation of secretary-treasurers to Israel last December.
