Communications Workers Endorse Gore for President
The 630,000-member Communications Workers of America today announced its endorsement of Vice President Al Gore for President of the United States in 2000.
"No other leader in public life can match Al Gore's understanding of the changes taking place in the information age economy, and what needs to be done to provide training opportunities to create good, high-skilled jobs for the 21st Century workforce," said CWA President Morton Bahr, who served with the Vice President on the President's Advisory Commission on the National Information Infrastructure.
"At the same time, CWA members know Vice President Gore as a man who cares deeply about the concerns of working families - affordable health care, family and medical leave protections, retirement security, good schools and a clean environment," Bahr said. "And we know him as a champion of equal rights for minorities and women, and of the rights of all workers to organize and bargain collectively.
"He has been a visionary leader in both the House and Senate and today as the most active and energetic Vice President in history," said Bahr. "Al Gore has the combination of experience, a brilliant mind and compassionate heart that make him uniquely qualified to lead the nation as our next President."
Polling of CWA members, according to union Secretary-Treasurer Barbara Easterling, shows that, "Our members overwhelmingly favor Al Gore over all of the other names that have been put forth for the 2000 presidential race." She added: "The enthusiastic reception that CWA delegates have given the Vice President at our conventions and legislative conferences leaves no doubt that our members will campaign hard for him in towns and cities all over the nation."
CWA is the world's largest telecommunications union and also represents members in journalism, broadcasting and cable, publishing, higher education, airlines, health care and public service.
