Celebrate Labor with Holiday Gifts

The workingfamilies.com website makes it easy to shop for union-made gifts for the holidays, from slick new scooters to computers, video games, clothes and toys.

But if you want to take your union shopping spree a step further, consider gifts that focus on labor and social justice.

The Labor Heritage Foundation has a catalog and a website that offer music, art, books and videos with a labor theme. For instance:
  • “Don’t Mourn — Organize! Songs of Labor Songwriter Joe Hill” on compact disc, $17.
  • “This Land is Your Land: An All-American Children’s Folk Classic” featuring Woody Guthrie and Arlo Guthrie, $17.
  • Posters of Cesar Chavez, Joe Hill, Mother Jones and others, $6 to $20.
  • “Working Stiffs, Union Maids, Reds and Riffraff: An Organized Guide to Films About Labor,” a 288-page book featuring 150 labor-related films, $20.
  • “Rosie the Riveter: We Can Do It” gift cards, box of six, $8.50.

If it’s stocking stuffers you need, the foundation sells buttons for a dollar each. Among the collection: “Friends Don’t Let Friends Cross Picket Lines,” “Unions: The Folks that Brought You the Weekend,” and “Solidarity Forever.”

The American Labor Museum in Haledon, N.J., doesn’t have a website but sells products by mail from its museum shop. Selections include:
  • “Rosie the Riveter” T-shirts, $10, and sweatshirts, $20.
  • “Cesar Chavez: Labor Leader” a story for children about the United Farm Workers leader, $7.95.
  • “We Were There! Songs of Working Women’s History, music by Bev Grant, $10.
  • Assorted labor bumper stickers, $1.50 each; the Bill of Rights, the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, reproduced on antique-looking parchment, $1 each; assorted note cards depicting labor scenes, $1 each.
