Beirne Foundation Offers Funds For College

For the 27th year, CWA’s Joe Beirne Foundation is trying to make it a little easier for CWA members and their families to pay for college.

Created in 1974 in honor of CWA’s founding president, the foundation will award 30 college scholarships, up to $3,000 each, for the 2001-2002 school year. CWA members, their spouses, children and grandchildren are eligible, as well as families of retired and deceased members.

The awards are available for American and Canadian students at state colleges, universities, private schools and community colleges, and apply to both undergraduate and graduate work. Some of the scholarships will be awarded specifically to students planning careers in labor studies or the education and rehabilitation of disabled and mentally retarded people.

Second-year scholarships are also being awarded. Students who received a 2000-2001 award are eligible again for up to $3,000, based on their achievements during the school year.

Applicants are asked to write a short essay about any aspect of the labor movement. The completed packets must be postmarked no later than March 31. Forms are available from CWA locals and more information is posted on locals’ bulletin boards.

The Beirne Foundation also offers aid for technical schools, as well as grants for community service training, fellowships and internships.

Guidelines for applying for the grants are in the foundation’s annual report, available from CWA locals or through headquarters. Write to:
