805 former AT&T Wireless Business & Customer Service Reps Organize Two Cingular Call Centers in Gree
Spurred on by the organizing successes of other unrepresented workers at Cingular, 805 former AT&T Wireless employees gained CWA representation at two call centers in Greensboro, NC on Sept. 9.
The workers – 222 customer service representatives at one center, and 583 business representatives at the other – actually began self-organizing in early 2004, months before the Cingular
Wireless-AT&T Wireless merger was announced. Respect, arbitrary discipline, and the lack of a grievance procedure were major issues. Both groups of workers will be represented by CWA Local 3607.
The employees' inside organizing committees were assisted by Local 3607 organizers Tracy Rooks and Kia Brown and other members of the local organizing committee. They were supported by local president Mike King and vice president Gary Hunter.
Nearly half of the nearly 5,000 former AT&T Wireless employees who have organized with CWA since March 2005 are employed in traditionally, anti-union southeastern states. The two Greensboro call centers are the fourth and fifth to be organized by former AT&T Wireless employees in the region, preceded by workers from Cingular call centers in Lebanon, Virginia, Memphis, Tenn., and Jackson, Miss.
