2008 CWA-IBEW Academic Awards

To:     All Alcatel-Lucent Local Presidents

The application period for the 2008/2009 school year CWA/IBEW/Alcatel-Lucent Academic Awards Program is now open.  Attached is the application that contains information regarding the program and the application process.

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2007.  Only calendar year 2008 applications will be accepted, so if you have any outdated ones left, please destroy them.  Information on how to obtain additional copies of the application can be found on page 2 of the attachment.

This is an excellent bargained-for benefit that provides for 15 Alcatel-Lucent scholarships of up to $6,500 annually, renewable three times.  In order to be eligible, high school seniors must have a minimum of a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale and have participated in community or school volunteer activities.  Please do all you can to make sure members who are parents of high school seniors are aware of the program.  Also, please emphasize to your members the importance of the volunteer service portion of the application.  Since the majority of applicants have high GPAs, the next determining factor for successful candidates usually is volunteer service.
