An early tentative settlement at AT&T includes strong wage, profit sharing and pension gains along with improvements in health care and other benefits and a breakthrough in organizing areas such as AT&T Wireless that currently are non-union.

The telecommunications industry is undergoing more change, as SBC Communications announced plans to acquire Ameritech, creating what is expected to become the biggest local phone company in America with operations from California to Connecticut.

Expanding CWA's base in wireless telephony and higher education, and grabbing a piece of AT&T's directory assistance service, local organizers have been busy signing up nearly 1,000 new members and laying the ground work for several hundred more.
