CWA District 3 Occupational Safety & Health Retreat

Under the leadership of District 3 Vice President Noah Savant and with assistance of Booker Lester, Administrative Director to the Vice President, the CWA Occupational Safety and Health Department conducted the CWA District 3 Occupational Safety and Health Retreat, May 17, 2008. Forty-six (46) local union safety and health activists representing 22 local unions participated in the Retreat held at the Jacksonville Crowne Plaza Riverfront in Jacksonville, Florida. Also, immediately preceding the Retreat, on May 15-16 the Department and the Center for Labor Education and Research, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama conducted a training session.

Federal OSHA Issues Employer-Paid Personal Protective Equipment Standard

After nine years, a lawsuit filed by the AFL-CIO and UFCW, and nearly a half-million workplace injuries, in November, 2007, the Bush OSHA Administration issued its Final Rule or Standard on general industry Employer-Paid Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The standard requires private sector and public sector employers- located in states having ?state plans?- to provide and pay for most types of PPE (as long as PPE has been previously required) used to comply with OSHA standards.

A six-day "train the trainer" program on workplace health and safety using a participatory popular education approach. Participants will learn the fundamentals of workplace health and safety, with a focus on the topics below. They will also learn how to teach or facilitate classes on these subjects for other union members.
