Ameenah Salaam was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Communications Workers of America by acclamation by delegates of the 79th CWA convention on July 10, 2023.
As CWA Secretary-Treasurer, Salaam is responsible for overseeing the union’s operating budget, investments and membership funds, facilities and other operations. She also is charged with ensuring full fiscal and legal compliance by the International union and locals with all government, financial and regulatory requirements.
Salaam has risen through the ranks from her early days as a proud CWA member, to a Steward, Local Officer, Staff Representative, Area Director, Assistant to a District Vice President, Assistant to the CWA International President and now CWA International Secretary-Treasurer. She has played critical leading roles in organizing, bargaining and mobilization campaigns, supporting staff and pushing CWA's core mission forward with effective strategic planning and fiscal responsibility. She has taken charge of union-wide issues in the CWA President’s Office, including union governance and administration, the Convention and Presidents’ Meeting, staffing, AFL-CIO coordination, overseeing internal and external communications, education, health & safety, human rights, and more.
A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Salaam started her union career when she went to work for Diamond State Telephone in 1991 as a customer service representative. She was elected as a CWA Local 13100 steward and served as Vice President of the local until September 1997 when she joined the CWA national staff.
