Verizon Wireless Workers Win Breakthrough

"The New York 50" at Verizon Wireless won a breakthrough in the form of seniority rights for layoffs and recalls along with solid compensation gains in their new 5-year settlement. District 1 Vice President Larry Mancino noted that seniority was a top issue -- and the last to be settled -- because last year the company had chosen to lay off employees with up to 10 years' service while keeping new hires who were still on probation.

Technicians at top of scale will receive wage hikes of 3 percent, compounding to 15.9 percent over term, and switching technicians at the top will get an additional $1,000 bonus each year. For those still in progression schedules, increases of 2 percent plus annual step increases will mean raises of 7 to 10 percent each year. The agreement preserves the short-term incentive plan, which pays each employee a yearly cash bonus of 5 percent of base salary.

President Bahr stated: "There's no question that it was our demonstrations at the Wireless stores that convinced management that we would all stand together with these 51 workers, and that we weren't going away."
