Union-Building Tops Agenda at Public Sector Conference

Meeting in Tucson, Ariz., for their sector conference, CWA public, health care and education members looked at ways to build CWA by strengthening their sector.

Nearly 140 participants discussed organizing strategies, union building and current issues affecting members, including privatization, the crisis in health care, state revenue shortfalls and key legislative issues.

Brooks Sunkett, CWA vice president for public, health care and education workers, stressed that all CWA locals "bring something to the table and can use their expertise" to build CWA's effectiveness.

CWA Executive Vice President Larry Cohen expanded on the theme of partnership, encouraging CWA locals to work together in organizing, political, community and legislative actions, and other campaigns that will help build CWA power.

One panel featured a discussion of how telecom and other private sector locals, by participating in public sector organizing, succeeded in strengthening their own locals.

Another session focused on strategic planning for issue, organizing and legislative campaigns. Participants received a program that walked through the political strategy used by CWA Local 8186 in Texas to defeat then Gov. George W. Bush's plan to privatize state service, and by Local 9119 to win a first contract at the University of California.
