NC Strikers at Verizon Continue Fight

While Verizon East management was littering the bargaining tables with contract retrogression demands this week, strikers at Verizon South in Western North Carolina continued to hold the line against their own set of family-unfriendly concession demands.

The 150 strikers, members of Local 3673, walked out May 19 to protect their emergency family leave and sick leave benefits and to protest abusive levels of forced overtime.

The first face-to-face meeting of bargaining committees in weeks is scheduled for June 30, reported Local President Tommy Pool.

He said strikers' spirits remain high, members of the community in the Ashville area continue to show strong support, and only one worker has returned to the job. "The company is giving that scab 24-hour security with two guards posted at his home every night," said Pool, commenting: "If they showed that kind of concern for the rest of the workforce we never would have been on strike."

District 3 is appealing to other CWA locals to contribute to the Adopt a Family program in support of the strike. For information on the program, locals should contract District 3 Administrative Assistant to the Vice President Booker Lester at (404) 296-5553.

"Some of our younger members with kids don't have any savings and they could sure use the extra help," said Pool.
