CWA Urges Democrats to Spotlight Economy

As the Democratic presidential contenders gather for their nationally televised debate this Saturday in Columbia, S.C., CWA is urging them to let Americans "hear something they haven't been hearing from the White House-a passionate concern for the economic plight of working families."

In a full page ad set to run May 3 in Columbia's daily paper, The State, CWA summed up the results of the White House leadership vacuum:

"Over the past two years, 2.5 million private sector jobs have been lost and over 10 million people who want jobs can't find them, including one million who have exhausted unemployment benefits. Millions of Americans have lost health insurance. Personal bankruptcies are at the highest level in history. Over $175 billion in 401(k) savings has been lost.

"Even the vital telecommunications and information technology sector-representing 22 percent of U.S. economic growth-has been devastated. This once vibrant industry, which is our best hope for future job creation, has lost more than 500,000 jobs over the past two years."

This week President Bahr also has been phoning the individual candidates to personally urge them to elevate the economy and job creation to the top of the campaign agenda.
