CWA Members Stand Strong at Verizon North Carolina
Two scab contractors were fired after one of them brandished a gun at CWA picketers in Sylva, N.C., as CWA's strike against Verizon – Western North Carolina continued this week.
Local 3673 President Tommy Pool said the strike by 150 members at the former GTE unit is "one hundred percent solid," with members maintaining picket lines at a dozen locations in communities surrounding Ashville. The workers walked out May 19 over abusive forced overtime levels as well as company demands to cut family medical leave and sick pay benefits. He said merchants throughout the area are showing support for the strike and many restaurants have let it be known that scabs aren't welcome.
